Waterproofing & Weather Protection
It depends on the brand and model. There's a significant difference between "weather resistant," "water resistant," and "waterproof" — and manufacturers use these terms loosely.
Waterproof means the box keeps contents dry even when submerged or exposed to sustained water contact. PAXSON & CO. boxes are certified IP65 + IP67 — dust-tight and fully submersible — with military-grade sealing for 100% water protection.
Weather resistant means protection against typical outdoor conditions. Pelican's BX90R is tested to MIL-SPEC 810G against 70 mph wind-blown rain and dust.
For IP ratings: IP54 (Zarges K470) means splash-proof. IP66 (Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro) means protected against powerful water jets. IP67 (PAXSON, YETI GoBox 60) means protected against temporary submersion. If you're mounting boxes on a roof rack and driving through heavy rain, river crossings, or harsh offroad conditions, full waterproofing matters significantly.
With a fully waterproof box like the PAXSON Offroad Box — yes, your gear stays completely dry even in heavy rain, mud, and stream crossings. Boxes rated as "weather resistant" or "splash-proof" (IP54) may allow some moisture ingress during sustained heavy rain, especially at highway speeds where water pressure increases.
For maximum protection, ensure the gasket seal is clean and free of debris before closing, and make sure all latches are fully engaged. Even a small piece of sand on the seal can compromise waterproofing.
IP stands for "Ingress Protection" and is followed by two digits. The first digit rates dust protection (0-6), the second rates water protection (0-9).
IP54 — Protected against dust ingress and splashing water (Zarges K470 standard)
IP65 — Dust-tight and protected against water jets (Zarges K470 upgraded)
IP66 — Dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets (Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro)
IP67 — Dust-tight and protected against temporary submersion (PAXSON, YETI GoBox)
Not all brands use IP ratings. When in doubt, look for real-world reviews from overlanders who've tested the boxes in wet conditions.
Size & Capacity Guide
The right size depends on what you're storing:
30L (e.g., Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro): Tools, recovery accessories, first aid kit, small electronics. A "single-category" box.
55L (e.g., PAXSON 55L): Recovery gear, basic camp kitchen, tool set, or clothing for 1-2 nights. Great as a secondary box or for vehicles with limited roof space.
66L (e.g., PAXSON 66L): Full camp kitchen, sleeping bags + pillows, or comprehensive tool/recovery kit. The perfect size for solo travelers.
95L (e.g., PAXSON 95L): The most popular size for overlanding. Fits camping chairs, full kitchen setup, bedding for two, or long recovery gear like shovels and axes. The go-to for roof rack mounting on SUVs and trucks.
110L+ (e.g., PAXSON Frontier 110L): Maximum storage for extended trips or families. Best for truck beds or very large roof rack platforms.
For a 2-3 night trip for two people, plan for approximately 150-200L of total box storage. A common setup is two 95L boxes — one for camp kitchen/gear and one for clothing/bedding. If you have a cooler separately, you can manage with a single 95L plus a 55L.
Solo travelers can often manage with a single 95L box for a weekend trip, keeping essentials inside the vehicle cabin.
Yes. Standard folding camp chairs (like Helinox-style chairs) fit easily in a 95L box. The PAXSON 95L has interior dimensions that accommodate most compact folding chairs, shovels, axes, and other long items. Full-size quad chairs may not fit — measure your chairs' folded dimensions first.
Mounting & Installation
There are three main mounting methods:
1. Quick-Release Systems (Fastest): The PAXSON Quick Release System uses a universal base plate that bolts to your rack once. After that, the box clicks in and out in under 5 seconds with no tools. Best option for daily drivers and frequent on/off use.
2. Bracket Mounting (Semi-Permanent): Brands like Front Runner offer dedicated mounting brackets (Stratchits, Wolf Pack Pro Rack Mounting Brackets) that semi-permanently attach boxes to the rack. More secure than straps but requires tools to remove.
3. Straps & Ratchets (Universal): Works with any box and any rack. Thread ratchet straps through the box handles or tie-down points and secure to the rack. Cheapest option but slowest and potentially less secure at high speeds.
The PAXSON Quick Release System uses a universal base plate compatible with virtually all aftermarket roof racks. It works directly with racks that have bolt-hole mounting. For racks with T-slot channels (like Front Runner Slimline II or Rhino Rack Pioneer), you'll need the PAXSON ScrewKit adapter, which slides into the T-slot and provides the bolt points for the Quick Release base plate.
Compatible with: Front Runner Slimline II, Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform, Yakima crossbars, Thule crossbars, ARB Base Rack, Prinsu racks, and most other T-slot or bolt-pattern racks.
Most premium offroad boxes feature lockable latches that accept padlocks. PAXSON, Pelican, and Zarges have steel latches with padlock hasps. The Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro does not have built-in lock points. The YETI GoBox uses Lockdown latches without standard padlock fittings — you'll need a cable lock.
For additional theft prevention, the PAXSON Quick Release System includes lockable connection points that prevent someone from removing the entire box from your rack. The optional PAXSON Care+ program also provides theft insurance coverage.
Vehicle Compatibility
For the Jeep Wrangler JL 4-door, the PAXSON 95L is our top recommendation. Its light weight (~22 lbs) is critical for Jeep roof racks, and the Quick Release system works perfectly with popular Jeep racks like the Front Runner Slimline II. A JL 4-door can fit two 95L boxes side by side on a full-length rack. For the JL 2-door, stick with one 95L due to shorter rack length.
For Jeep Gladiators, you have the additional option of mounting boxes in the truck bed. Heavier boxes like the Pelican BX90R make more sense here since bed weight is less critical than roof weight.
This varies significantly by vehicle. Common dynamic (driving) load ratings:
Jeep Wrangler JL: ~150 lbs · Toyota 4Runner: ~130 lbs · Ford Bronco: ~150 lbs · Toyota Tacoma: ~100-120 lbs · Land Rover Defender: ~330 lbs
Remember: the dynamic load rating includes the rack weight. A typical platform rack weighs 40-65 lbs, leaving 65-100 lbs for boxes and gear. Always check your vehicle's owner manual. Static (parked) ratings are typically 3-5x higher than dynamic ratings.
Materials & Durability
Aluminum (Zarges, Alubox): Lightest option, virtually indestructible, handles extreme temperatures (-112°F to 302°F), classic expedition look. Downsides: only splash-proof (not waterproof), can dent and scratch, higher price for larger sizes, no quick-release mount options.
LLDPE / Plastic (PAXSON, Pelican): Better waterproofing, more features (bottle openers, quick-release), more color options, good impact resistance. Downsides: heavier than aluminum, can degrade with prolonged UV exposure if not maintained.
For most overlanders, a waterproof LLDPE box with IP67 certification is the more practical choice. For expedition-grade builds or weight-obsessed setups, aluminum wins.
Aluminum boxes like the Zarges K470 are famously bear-resistant — Zarges even tested one with a bear, and the bear gave up. Premium LLDPE boxes (PAXSON, Pelican) with steel latches also provide significant deterrence. However, no camping box is certified "bear-proof" in the way that approved bear canisters are. In bear country, always follow local food storage regulations.
Features & Accessories
Generally, stacking works best within the same brand due to interlocking lid/base designs. PAXSON boxes stack with other PAXSON boxes. YETI GoBoxes have their own Pack-and-Stack system. Front Runner Wolf Pack Pros stack only with other Wolf Pack Pros (not the older Wolf Packs). Zarges boxes have self-centering stacking corners.
You can physically stack different brands on top of each other, but without interlocking designs, they may shift during transit. Secure mixed-brand stacks with straps.
Usually not — mounting hardware is sold separately for most brands. The PAXSON Overlander Set bundles two boxes with two Quick Release mounts at a package price. Otherwise, expect mounting systems to cost extra: PAXSON Quick Release (~$79-129), Pelican Cargo Roof Mounts (~$100-200), Front Runner Stratchits (~$60-80).
All boxes can alternatively be mounted with universal ratchet straps via built-in tie-down points or handles.
Care & Maintenance
After every trip: rinse with a garden hose or pressure washer on a gentle setting. For stubborn mud, use warm water with mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents that could damage the LLDPE shell or degrade the gasket seal.
For aluminum boxes (Zarges): a damp cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface.
Always leave the lid open after cleaning to allow the interior to fully dry. Trapped moisture can lead to mildew.
LLDPE and polyethylene boxes can degrade from prolonged UV exposure, becoming brittle over time. Most premium boxes (PAXSON, Pelican) include UV-blocking agents in the material. For additional protection, apply 303 Aerospace Protectant or a similar UV-blocking spray every 3-6 months. If your box lives on the roof rack permanently, this maintenance is especially important.

Fahrzeugkompatibilität
Für den Jeep Wrangler JL 4-Türer ist die PAXSON 95L unsere Top-Empfehlung. Das leichte Gewicht (~10 kg) ist entscheidend für Jeep-Dachträger. Ein JL 4-Türer fasst zwei 95L Boxen nebeneinander. Beim JL 2-Türer reicht der Platz für eine 95L.
Für den Gladiator gibt es die Option, Boxen auf der Ladefläche zu montieren. Schwerere Boxen wie der Pelican BX90R machen hier mehr Sinn.

Material & Haltbarkeit
Aluminium (Zarges, Alubox): Leichteste Option, praktisch unzerstörbar, hält extreme Temperaturen aus. Nachteile: nur spritzwassergeschützt, kann dellen, kein Quick-Release.

Für die meisten Overlander ist eine IP67-zertifizierte LLDPE-Box die praktischere Wahl.

Stapeln funktioniert am besten innerhalb derselben Marke, da Deckel und Böden ineinandergreifen. Verschiedene Marken kann man physisch übereinander stapeln, aber ohne Verzahnung können sie verrutschen. Gemischte Stapel mit Spanngurten sichern.

Pflege & Wartung
Nach jeder Tour: Mit Gartenschlauch oder Hochdruckreiniger auf sanfter Stufe abspülen. Für hartnäckigen Schmutz warmes Wasser mit milder Seife. Aggressive Chemikalien vermeiden. Für Aluminium-Boxen reicht ein feuchtes Tuch. Deckel nach der Reinigung immer offen lassen.
LLDPE-Boxen können durch UV-Einwirkung altern. Premium-Boxen (PAXSON, Pelican) enthalten UV-Blocker im Material. Zusätzlich alle 3-6 Monate 303 Aerospace Protectant oder ähnliches UV-Schutzspray auftragen. Besonders wichtig bei dauerhafter Dachträgermontage.

Cela dépend de la marque et du modèle. Il existe une grande différence entre « résistant aux intempéries », « déperlant » et « étanche ».

Impermeabilidad & Protección
Depende de la marca y el modelo. Existe una gran diferencia entre «resistente a la intemperie», «repelente al agua» e «impermeable».
Impermeable significa que la caja mantiene el contenido seco incluso sumergida. Las cajas PAXSON & CO. están certificadas IP65 + IP67 — herméticas al polvo y totalmente sumergibles — con sellado de grado militar.
Resistente a la intemperie = protección contra condiciones habituales. Pelican BX90R = MIL-SPEC 810G.
IP54 (Zarges K470) = antisalpicaduras. IP66 (Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro) = chorros potentes. IP67 (PAXSON, YETI GoBox 60) = inmersión temporal. Para montaje en baca, la impermeabilidad total es imprescindible.
Con una PAXSON Offroad Box — sí, incluso bajo lluvias fuertes y cruces de ríos. Las cajas IP54 pueden dejar pasar humedad. Verifica siempre la junta de goma y los cierres antes de cerrar.
